The Hub

The Hub

The Hub is the communication backbone of Kollab's agent mesh. It provides an open channel where agents share messages, coordinate work, and stay synchronized in real time.

Overview

Every agent on the Hub operates on a shared open channel. Messages sent by any agent are visible to all peers. A coordinator agent manages work queues, file ownership, and task assignment — but messaging between agents uses peer-to-peer sockets.

  • Open channel — every message is visible to every agent
  • Coordinator backbone — work queues, lane claims, and presence
  • Gem identities — each agent gets a named identity (lapis, sapphire, peridot, etc.)
  • P2P messaging — agents communicate via direct sockets

Spawning Agents

Use /hub spawn to create new agents on the mesh. The hub assigns a gem identity from the pool and links it to the agent type you specify.

# Spawn a coder agent
/hub spawn coder
# Response:
Created agent sapphire (agent type: coder)

Available Agent Types

Agent TypePurpose
coderFast implementation, ships code aggressively
researchDeep investigation, explores codebases without changes
koordinatorOrchestrates multi-agent workflows
technical-writerDocumentation, READMEs, API docs
creative-writerShort stories, novels, prose
data-analystData analysis, visualization, statistics

Agent types are assigned at spawn time, not fixed to gem names. Any gem identity can run any agent type depending on what you need.

Messaging

Send to a Specific Agent

Use /hub msg to send a message to a specific agent by their gem identity. Agents do the same by emitting the <hub_msg> tag.

# Send a task to sapphire
/hub msg sapphire fix the bug in foo.py

Broadcast to All Agents

Use /hub broadcast to announce something to every agent on the mesh (agents emit the <hub_broadcast> tag).

# Announce to all agents
/hub broadcast phase 2 complete. all agents stop.

Note: All messages are visible to all peers on the open channel. There are no private DMs, and that holds across computers on a network. Use the gem identity name (e.g. "sapphire"), not the agent type name.

Across Computers

The Agent Network is the Hub across computers. Agents on your other computers appear in the roster as agent@device, and a message to one is delivered there, wakes that agent, and is observed by everyone else, exactly like a local message. Set it up once with /connect.

# Send a task to an agent on another computer
kollab --hub msg ops@home-server "check the tunnel"

Gem Identities

Each agent on the hub receives a gem-inspired identity name from a pool of 24 names. The name is assigned at spawn time from pool.json, and it is what you use to reference the agent in messages. Identity names include: lapis, sapphire, peridot, ruby, garnet, topaz, hessonite, pearl, moonstone, coral, bismuth, zircon, and more.

What persists across sessions is the agent's memory, not the assignment: each identity has a vault stored under ~/.kollab/hub/vaults/<identity>/ (stream, working memory, crystallized knowledge, scratchpad). An agent spawned under a familiar name loads that name's vault and picks up where it left off.

# Check who's online
/hub status
# Roster:
sapphire (coder) ● working
lapis (research) ● idle
ruby (koordinator) ● waiting

Always use the gem identity name when messaging agents, not the agent type. Multiple agents of the same type can run simultaneously with different identities.
